Our YAFL board met this week to discuss our current environment and what our fall football season might look like. As most of you know, we play in the Four Corners YAFL league based out of Farmington. Governor Lujan has banned football and soccer for this fall. That means our league has been forced to cancel the season.
Our local Durango YAFL board has been trying to reach out to other youth teams outside of New Mexico in an effort to piece together and abbreviated season. As of right now, there are no other teams (in NM or CO) that are willing to commit to playing games with us at this point in time. However, Bayfield, Pagosa, Cortez, and Blanding have all tentatively agreed to revisit forming our own league later in the Fall if it looks safe to do so. We will be following the lead from the middle schools, high schools and CHSAA.
We all agreed to keep trying to figure out some sort of youth football program for our kids, but until we know what that looks like, we are going to issue everyone full refunds before we hit our deadline with Sports Engine. If you have already registered, you will begin to see refunds as soon as next week.
The board threw out a lot of good potential ideas to get our players together in a safe, fun, athletic way; but we know it won’t be the full, competitive tackle season like we are used to seeing. As much as it pains us to make this call, we want to do the right thing for our football families in two ways: 1) make sure we have something to offer before taking your money and 2) allow you to make other sports plans for Fall before it’s too late.
THAT SAID, if we are able to figure something out, those registered for 2020 will get first priority.
Last note: From a financial standpoint, Durango Youth Football is non-profit organization that generates all of our funding for safety gear, pads, helmets, uniforms, etc from 1) registration fees 2) local sponsorships 3) game day gate fees & concessions 4) fund raising efforts. As you can imagine, we are not generating any revenue this year, but we are keeping annual renewals, updated safety equipment and online systems current and paid for in the hopes of a 2021 season.
If you would like to donate all or a portion of your registration fee from this year, shoot an email back to ONLY durangoYAFL@gmail.com and let us know. We are planning to set up a “Community Donation” page on our website thanking anyone who supports Durango Youth Football through this tough year.
Huge THANK YOU to Durango Motor Company who has agreed to cover the costs of our helmet splash shields, as we are still holding out hope for a safe return to football this Fall!
Please let us know if you have any further questions and stay safe,
Durango YAFL Board
